7:00 PM - 8:30 PMUniversity Synagogue7:00 p.m. "Getting Arrested For Soviet Jewry and Other Tales Of A Half Century As A Rabbi" will be Rabbi Rachlis’ topic at Shabbat services, led by him and Cantor Braier. Rabbi Rachlis will share a number of stories from his five decades as a rabbi – some humorous, some life-changing – which trace the way Judaism has shaped him and how he has taught Judaism to thousands of people over the years.
He'll recall stories from when he decided to become a rabbi, his rabbinical school experiences, his approach to interpreting and reinterpreting Judaism in a humanistic and universalistic way, and his desire to “open up” Judaism to be inclusive, creative, experimental, rational and exciting!
Rabbi Rachlis will share stories of studying with Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism, his White House Fellows year working on Middle East peace in the White House and State Department, and his quarter century of attending the Renaissance Institute, which has brought so many speakers to our congregation.
The rabbi will also share stories of visiting Jewish communities – large and small – around the world and his experiences as an ABC television host, as well as hosting a cable TV show. Please be with us to learn about our rabbi as he shares with us the journey of his rabbinic life.
