- 6:00 p.m. “40 And Under” Sushi Dinner with Rabbi Rachlis. RSVP by Thursday, Oct. 13. If you are a University Synagogue member, who’s age is 40 and under, join Rabbi Rachlis for a complimentary Shabbat dinner. Get to know Rabbi Rachlis better and other University Synagogue members who are your age. Remember, at University Synagogue, membership is free for those ages 40 and under. (Weather permitting, the dinner will be outside. Masks are encouraged. We will serve a variety of sushi and salad.)
- 6:00 p.m. Congregational Shabbat Dinner. Menu: Romaine with mixed greens, cucumber, carrots, mushroom, radishes and tomatoes, topped with croutons, served with California tomato dressing and balsamic vinaigrette on the side, honey tomato saffron braised chicken, roasted root vegetables, couscous pilaf.
- 7:00 p.m. Synaplex Shabbat Alive Services, our jazz and pop service with a band, led by Rabbi Rachlis and Cantor Braier, during which stand-up comedian, actor, professor and author, Wayne Federman, will speak on the topic “The History of Stand Up Comedy: The Jewish Connection.” Mr. Federman has appeared multiple times on The Tonight Show and was the head writer for Jimmy Fallon. He has his own special on Comedy Central and has acted in numerous films and TV shows, including Curb Your Enthusiasm, Silicon Valley, Larry Sanders, Community, Legally Blonde, Knocked Up, Step Brothers, 50 First Dates, and Funny People. For HBO, he co-produced the Emmy-winning documentary, The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, as well as winning an Emmy for George Carlin’s American Dream. Mr. Federman is also an adjunct professor of stand-up history and performance at USC, and he was part of the first stand-up comedy tour of Israel after the 2001 Intifada. His book, The History of Stand-Up: From Mark Twain To Dave Chapelle, has received rave reviews. Sponsored by Drs. Michael Schaffer and Rina Palumbo.
