JOIN UNIVERSITY SYNAGOGUE ON OUR SEPHARDIC JEWISH HERITAGE TOUR TO SPAIN AND PORTUGAL
LED BY RABBI ARNOLD RACHLIS AND CANTOR RUTI BRAIER UNIVERSITY SYNAGOGUE, IRVINE CA
JUNE 29 – JULY 14, 2015
As you know, our many University Synagogue tours to Israel and Copenhagen, Eastern Europe and Ukraine, Israel, Jordan and Turkey, Spain and Morocco, Argentina and Brazil, Australia and New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany and France and Spain were great successes. Members of University Synagogue, and their relatives and friends, have joined Ruti and me in a series of most unforgettable experiences. Over 250 men, women and children have traveled together over the years and they have had incredible opportunities not only in encountering ancient and modern history, but also in meeting fascinating people, including diplomats and activists, as well as artists and writers.
Fun, learning, friendship and a deep connection to our Jewish heritage have characterized these tours. Our travelers have met Jews just like us and those who were very different; they have faced the complexity of political and social issues and have rejoiced in the optimism and hope that was often evident. Most importantly, they have discovered just how much being Jewish mattered to them and how much more there is to learn and discover.
Our tour to Spain and Portugal is going to be a wonderful trip – full of fascinating people, places and adventures. After all, where can you experience such a powerful historical confluence of the three great Western religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam! Learn about Islam and Christianity’s intellectual traditions and how they were influenced by Judaism and how Judaism was influenced by them.
Visit “Juderias,” learn about crypto-Jews who stayed, meet their descendants and visit the earliest synagogues and yeshivot of Europe.
Spend Shabbat at services, dinner and leisure with local Jews who will share their stores with us. See breathtaking scenery in both Spain and Portugal and feel connected and renewed by traveling with fellow University Synagogue members while getting to know them better.
Past participants have found our University Synagogue tours to be incredibly memorable, both for friendships made and cultures experienced. On these trips, we always visit Jewish communities of the past and present, while simultaneously creating our own community for the present and future.
Even if you have hesitated to travel with a group, this will be a different experience, since we already share a relationship through our congregation. Also, the advantages of traveling with a group are many, including discounted rates and access to important speakers and political figures.
Non-members of our congregation are welcome to join their relatives and friends, who are members, on the tour.
Before we leave on our tour, we’ll gather for an orientation session to meet each other and to learn about the places that we’ll visit. From past experience, we know that this trip will fill up very quickly. (Thirty people have inquired thus far, so please responded now to guarantee a space.)
