Congratulations to University Synagogue’s own Gene Alterman for winning second place at the second annual IsraeLeader Award given by Jewish Federation and Family Services of Orange County on May 18 at the 2014 Israel Expo.
IsraeLeader recognizes individuals in Orange County who have spearheaded outstanding community Israel projects or programming that has enhanced our community’s connection to Israel.
Gene has been the Executive Director of the Orange County International Jewish Film Festival for the last fifteen years and has brought the finest in Israeli film to Orange County. Showcasing the best Israeli directors, actors, and screenwriters, these movies play first at the Film Festival. To screen films like “Hunting for Elephants” and “Out in the Dark” Gene works closely with Israeli distributors.
A twelve-year member of the Executive Board of the ADL Gene, with the ADL, also premiered “Visa al Paraiso” about Gilberto Bosques, the Mexican Ambassador to France, who saved hundreds of Jews in the 1930s.
