Freedom is such a blessed gift, a gift that we’ll be celebrating this Friday night at our Pre-July 4th Americana Shabbat.

Adding to our joy are today’s two Supreme Court decisions on Marriage Equality.  Today, our country has taken the newest step in becoming, even more, “the land of the free,” because this nation has created an equal “home of the brave” for the men and women who refused to let prejudice and bigotry define their rights.  Gay and straight men and women have travelled this path together – we’ve all grown.  LGBT folks are less afraid to speak their truth and their non-LGBT friends, families and fellow citizens have evolved to realize that “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” must apply to all Americans.

One third of Americans, as of today, live in states that grant equal rights to all.  But there’s still a lot of work ahead.  Let us celebrate being Americans and Jews in a country that has taught the world the meaning of democracy and let us continue to expand that lesson within our own country, as well.
